Abstract
The article substantiates the position that the softening of the back-lingual consonants caused by the front vowels in the history of the Proto-Slavic language was not less than seven, as they write in all textbooks, but not less than seven (softening of the back-lingual consonants caused by the consonant [j '], - so called iota or iota ward - as a phenomenon completely different in the mechanism of implementation, is not considered in this article), and they were very different, namely: two transitional wards, one non-transitional ward, two transitional palatalizations and two non-transitional palatalizations. At the same time, their chronology is substantiated.
