Abstract

The article is devoted to relations of USSR and USA with the Iraqi Kurds in the 1960s. The international aspect of the Kurdish problem in Iraq is a relevant topic for contemporary historical research. Throughout the 1960s Iraqi Kurds became an instrument of bipolar confrontation between both superpowers, were used to solve their own regional and global international problems. The paper traces changes in the relations of the Kurds with Baghdad and the super-powers, the motives of their attempts to interact with the United States and the reasons for the failure of the reorientation to Washington in the first half of the 1960s. Also notes importance of contacts with the USSR for the Kurdish uprising. The author reveals new facets of Soviet and American policy on the Kurdish question in Iraq, starting with the Kurdish uprising in 1961 and ending with the establishment of the second Baathist regime in 1968.
