Abstract

The article analyzes the process and the results of negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada. The Agreement-in-Principle was signed in Brussels in October 2013 after almost five years of negotiations. The final version of the agreement will come into force about 2 years later after ratification by 28 European parliaments and the parliament of Canada. CETA is expected to be a boon for exporters on both sides by removing 98 per cent of the import duties on a wide range of products on Day 1. CETA establishes rules demanding foreign investors be treated equitably and no less favorably than domestic investors. Canada and EU will get greater access to each other’s government procurement markets.
