Abstract

The Truce of Andrusovo stipulated an exchange of prisoners of war. The paper describes the legal framework created by the Russian government to find and repatriate eligible prisoners (clergy, nobility, and military personnel) while enforcing a ban on repatriating captive commoners. Practical implementation of the swap is exemplified by a case of Ostafii Kleczkowski, a Lithuanian nobleman who had been taken captive, released, but then after many complications returned to the service of the tsar.
