Abstract
It is customary to describe the imperfect of negation through the rule of “replacing” the perfect form with the imperfect in a negative context. This description does not have sufficient explanatory power. The paper proposes a direct interpretation of the meaning of the imperfect in the context of denial. A negative imperfect has two meanings: one is rare, contextually conditioned, synchronous, when the combination “not + the verb NSV” denotes a continuing state (He does not read my letter); another basic, retrospective (Om did not read my letter). For an affirmative context, the similarities and differences between retrospective imperfect and perfect are well known. The work shows that in a negative context, the choice between an imperfect in a retrospective meaning and a perfect is determined by practically the same factors as in the affirmative.
