Abstract

The article discusses institutional forms of care for the elderly. Traditional form of elderly care (home care), when the family members care for the elderly, is associated with social, psychological, economic and other risks. However, alternative institutional forms of aging care (e.g. retirement home) are still not widely used. In the context of a qualitative social research (by in-depth interview method), reasons, causes and social barriers that arise when addressing this form of institutional care are analyzed. Based on various social science approaches and on the results of the qualitative research, authors came to a conclusion that nowadays it is not the economic but the social causes that hinder and make difficult acceptance and spread of institutional forms of care for the elderly. This means stigmatization and negative stereotipization of all alternative forms of care.
